Dear friends, it is a pleasure for us to introduce ourselves and present the first newsletter of the new series from the Asociación Pro-DIA, “News from the Ground.”
This publication is made possible by all the members and the professional team that makes up our organization. In this newsletter series we will be providing you with information about current events and successes at the local, regional, and national level here in Peru, as well as sharing our experiences and various activities from working in the field on projects, so that you are able to be involved in the work that you support.

COVID-19 Vaccines in Pucará
In June of last month, vaccines became available to older adults (70+ years old). This activity is under the responsibility of Mrs. Gisela Linares- Licensed Nurse of the Pucará Health Center.
Four locations have been identified to carry out vaccine distribution, including:
- The Parish of San Isabel (Pucará)
- The Health Post of Chijnaya
- The Health Post of Tuni Grande
- The Health Post of Colque (Tambo de Colque)
As of July 14th, 356 people have received at least one dose of the vaccine and 256 people have received the second dose. There is still no set date for the vaccination of the next group (60+ years old).
Puno, Safe Tourist Desitnation- Safe Travels
On July 8th Mrs. Lydia Garcia Cortez, Vice Minister of Tourism, visited Puno in representation of the Ministry of Foreign Trade and Tourism (MINCETUR) and provided the region with the international stamp of “SAFE TRAVELS,” which recognizes “Puno- Lake Titicaca” as a safe tourist destination that follows all health and safety protocols related to COVID-19, guaranteeing the health of national and foreign visitors.
Traditional Market “Santisima Virgen del Carmen”- Pucará
Every year around July 16th, the market of Pucará takes place in honor of the Virgen del Carmen. However, weeks before, the market begins with an animal auction. For many years, and still to this day, this annual market is one of the most important events on the Altiplano.
One defining characteristic of this market is the sale of lumber and other construction materials needed for the construction of houses. It is also the only time of year that people can buy medicinal herbs that come from the cost, jungle, and Andes mountains and Kallawayas healers of Bolivia often attend.
Since it is one of the most important traditional markets of the Altiplano, bartering and trading goods is still practiced in different forms. Thousands of merchants from southern Peru come to the market to buy and sell goods. In past years, the market had international merchants and buyers who came from Argentina, Bolivia, Chile, and other regions of the Andes.
Although the local authorities prohibited the realization of the market last year, it was still held normally with the same attendance as other years. COVID health and safety protocols are not strictly followed at the market, however many in attendance believe there are herbs that prevent and cure the virus.

Vacunación Contra el COVID-19 en el Distrito de Pucará
El mes de Junio pasado se ha dado inicio a la Campaña de Vacunación para los adultos mayores (70 años a más). Esta actividad se encuentra bajo la responsabilidad de la Sra. Gisela Linares – Licencia en Enfermería del Centro de Salud de Pucara.
Se ha previsto 04 locaciones para llevar a cabo la vacunación, esto es:
- Parroquia Santa Isabel.
- (Pucara).Puesto de Salud de Chijnaya.
- Puesto de Salud de Tuni Grande.
- Puesto de Salud de Colque (Tambo de Colque)
Hasta el 14 de Julio se ha realizado la aplicación de 356 primeras dosis y 256 segundas dosis. Aun no se tiene fecha determinada para la vacunación del siguiente grupo ( 60 años a mas).
Puno, Destino Turistico Seguro- Safe Travels
En fecha 08 de Julio se tuvo la visita de la Sra. Lydia Garcia Cortez – Viceministra de Turismo, quien en representación del Ministerio de Comercio Exterior y Turismo (MINCETUR), hizo entrega del sello internacional “SAFE TRAVELS” el que reconoce a “Puno – Lago Titicaca” como un destino turístico seguro que cumple con todos los protocolos de bioseguridad de prevención del Covid19, por lo que, se garantiza la salubridad de los visitantes nacionales y extranjeros.
Feria Tradicional “Santisima Virgen del Carmen”- Pucará
Como todos los años los días 16 de julio, se lleva a cabo la feria de Pucará, en honor a la Virgen del Carmen, sin embargo, semanas antes la feria empieza con el remate de ganado. Desde años anteriores y actualmente, esta feria anual es una de las más importantes del Altiplano.
Algunas de las características particulares de esta feria es que se venden palos y todo tipo de materiales necesarios para la construcción de viviendas; es la única vez en el año que se pueden comprar yerbas medicinales provenientes de la costa, selva y sierra de los Andes, también concurren los curanderos Kallawayas de Bolivia.
Al ser una de las ferias tradicionales más importantes del Altiplano, el trueque se sigue practicando en sus diferentes modalidades y medidas. Concurren miles de personas provenientes de todo el sur del Perú, trayendo mercadería y comprando. Años atrás, esta feria era internacional, ya que venían comerciantes de Argentina, Chile, Bolivia y de otras regiones andinas.
El año pasado, pese a que las autoridades locales han prohibido su realización, la feria anual se ha llevado con normalidad con tanta concurrencia como todos los años. Poco se consideran los protocolos de bioseguridad en este contexto de pandemia, sin embargo, creen que hay yerbas que previene y cura el virus.
